Trends

Openings use the "first sale" date on each sales tax permit, and closures use the out-of-business date the Comptroller recorded. Counts are listed restaurants at business addresses. So far in 2026, 80 opened and 41 closed.

Read with care: the state dataset only covers businesses active at some point in the last four years. Restaurants that closed before about 2022 aren't in it, so older openings and older year-end totals are undercounted, and closures only start in 2022.

Listed restaurants open at each year end

From 21 at the end of 2010 to 456 open today. Each point counts restaurants that had opened by December 31 and had no out-of-business date by then. The last point is today (2026-10-21). Values before 2022 are low because restaurants that closed earlier aren't in the data.

No clear single direction. The center ended 8.5 km north of where it was in 2010, but it wandered on the way (17.7 km of trail for 8.5 km of net movement), so the trail is better read year by year than as one trend.

A brand is the restaurant name with city names, branch numbers and company words (LLC, Inc…) dropped, whoever owns each location, so a franchise run by separate companies still counts as one chain. A location filed only under a company name (like "Sri Laxmi Foods Coppell LLC") joins the brand of a sibling company with the same name stem. Food trucks are left out. Restaurant-and-grocery chains are undercounted: some of their stores are registered as groceries, which this data doesn't cover. A shared name doesn't prove a shared business: two unrelated places can both be called "Bombay Grill".
